Music of the Week

^-^ Introducing the Don Juan Symphony, by Richard Strauss.

I'm going to see the MSU Symphony perform this at the Wharton Center tomorrow. This piece is absolutely terrific, and will definitely keep me, if not all the rest of the audience (even those who are texting in the next row down), on the edge of my seat. This is one of the most difficult-to-play scores ever written for orchestra, according to my violin instructor. And if he thinks it's hard, it's probably enough to blow the mind of any average person, 'cause the guy can play.

Notice the conductor's interesting way of directing:

^.^ Tomorrow, the orchestra is also performing Beethoven's Ninth, which includes the choir; so, *squee*---I can't wait to hear the choir and orchestra together.

  1. How was it Kayla?? Were you out of your seat at the end? ;) Missed you Sunday!

    1. Technically, yes, I was out of my seat; but that was because we switched seats at the end of the first piece. It was really cool to see the orchestra in action, though. For the first part of the concert, we were stuck right up front and next to the basses...which was kind of limiting, but basses are still cool. Then the choir people moved out of the balcony and we stole some seats. It was impressive, seeing them perform "Ode to Joy" (which was in German, but, hey). Missed you Sunday, too. We had to stay home due to some (large)family difficulties.

    2. Hey again Kayla,

I didn't see your reply 'till I checked the actual post just now. I thought it would send me an email, but I should have been smart enough to realize that it would only send notifications to me if I subscribed. Shows how observant and smart I am :\ Sorry about that...

Glad you liked the concert...I love 'grand' pieces. Speaking of music, there is a piece by a group called 'the Piano Guys' that I just found recently on Youtube. You may have heard already. It's by a..I guess kind of a group..called 'The Piano Guys'. A 'piano guy' and a 'Cello guy' play different rearranged classical and modern pieces and they have a lot of special effects. The one I just found is called "The Cello Song", a rearrangement of the "Unaccompanied Cello Suite", set to 7 Cello's instead of one. It's different but nice and lively...I love the sound of the Cello! Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry4BzonlVlw&feature=relmfu It's funny too because it's actually only one guy playing each part, and they duplicate him so that it looks like there are several playing. It's not what I'd call 'grand', its a piece that made me laugh at first and then I just sat and listened.

Hope to see you soon! If I don't, I'll probably be sending you a letter soon with my usual ramblings... :)

    3. It is really cool how they mixed that...the piece is pretty neat on its own, but the video takes the cake. Sam (who plays cello) just kind of stared at it for a moment, and then asked, "What is he /doing/?"
I have seen some other pieces performed by them---but you have to wonder why they call themselves 'The Piano Guys' when there's only one piano guy. :p

I'm not sure what we'll be doing this Sunday; Dad is working, but we might still be able to make it out...we'll have to wait and see.

    4. Yeah, 'The Piano Guys' is a rather odd title. I think it might be something about the 'cello guy' having arrived later...which I guess doesn't really explain anything because there was still only one piano guy.

Hope you all can make it out Sunday. Even if you just make it out for Soccer, we can discuss our possible Sleepover/get-together plans... We didn't get to talk with Gillian and Mallory yet as they weren't at Church on Wednesday. It's still supposed to be 90o on Sunday. Quite the change from our usual cold Memorial weekends. I'm not sure which I'd rather it be, cold and rainy or hot and humid. Perhaps the former, 'cause at least you can kind of warm up :)
