Recap of August

Sooo, what happened during August?

Nothing much out of the ordinary. I was asked to play with the pit orchestra of our local acting group’s production of The Wizard of Oz. I’m the only violinist, which puts me in a very scary position. I mean, just look at this music:

Anyway, I’m plugging along with that. Show doesn’t play until the second or third weekend of October, so I’ve got time.

Of course, I was looking through the music when I first got it and going, "What is that?". So we watched the movie to get the jist of things, and now everything makes sense. While we were watching it, the commentary was rolling:

"They had color in 1939?!"

"She's not wearing the shoes in that shot!"

"Wow, compared to the Munchkins, the Winkies have pretty awesome voices."

"The Tinman untied the hot air balloon! He's a traitor!"

 It was much fun. ^.^

We went to the Civil War reenactment again this year. The kids just love (and I hate) to see the battle and hear those cannons roar. I like to stay to the back of the park while that’s going on; not too fond of gunfire. However, the shops were fun to browse through; they had clothing, cookingware, weapons, and all sorts of stuff from the Civil War era. They even had a drummer and a fife player, and some other random soldier who danced an Irish jig. We stopped at a woodcarver’s tent, and the lady gave Jesse quite a few tips to use on his own projects; Lydia was given some sewing lessons, and came away with some kind of handkerchief embroidery thing.

I’ve been keeping up with reading and writing, of course, and a little drawing. Just sketches of characters and random little people, really.

Oh, and another thing: I now have glasses. Not all-the-time glasses; these are just for reading because my eyes aren’t strong enough to handle the amount of reading that I’m doing. A source of headaches has been discovered; apparently my eyes get tired and just quit, and my head starts to pound. It’s funny, really; I, who have been an avid reader since the age of five, have weak eyes. Hmm. Well, that’s how it stands.
Here they are:

Yes, they are large and dorky. I liked the color (at least, over some of the others that were covered by insurance) so I snagged these (plus, the co-pay was much smaller).

Anyroad, not much else has happened this summer. I finished piano and violin lessons last week, and auditions for choir and orchestra are on Saturday. For violin, I’ve got Handel’s “Sonata in D Major” and for choir “The Infinite Shining Heavens”, which is an aria and I don’t know why on earth I chose it. It was under the list of songs for high voice. *Shrug* It’s in a horrible key and even worse time signature, but, oh well. Wish me grace.

Dia leat, mo chara.

Oh, and I almost forgot; I got this painting at the farmer's market in exchange for a bar of soap. I watched the girl do it entirely with spray-paint. Impressive, eh? It's hanging above my desk.

Firefox has crashed multiple times in the making of this post. Stupid, human-made technology.

  1. Yeah, not a big fan of the wizard of oz...too much drama over a pair of shoes, and besides its a dream anyway, she could just pinch herself to wake up. :P
Haha, we went to the Civil War Muster too! We went on Saturday...I, for one, enjoyed the battle, but that may be just because I'm a boy. :)
Oh, and if you think your glasses our dorky, you should see mine. ;)

    1. Yup, it's definitely over dramatized...everything. Not to mention ridicules. There's a whole host of rifle-bearing people, and they never once thought to take a shot at the witch? :P It never was on my list of most thought-provoking movies.

We went to the Civil War Muster on Sunday afternoon. It's too bad we didn't go Saturday; we might have run into you guys at some point (although that park it kinda big). The only reason I don't enjoy the battles is because I'm rather gun-shy...ever since my dad shot his rifle out the window, I've been sensitive to loud noises. Even sudden, unexpected sneezes. *Looks around nervously*

  2. Oiy. Yes, you do need grace for the inks on that sheet music! Have fun with a scary solo part.
Very nice glasses! Quirky... And you know how to pull them off too. (Well, haha, hopefully you can pull them off in the literal sense as well. ;)
And for an awkward side-note, "Young Nolan" is the perfect name for that character there. Just saying. :)

    1. Yes, I will have much fun. *Cringes* Our first rehearsal with the actors is tomorrow.
Haha, well, thank you. Don't they just draw attention away from the zits? That's probably the only improvement.
As for Nolan...well, yes; I suppose he does suit his name pretty well. There's an older Nolan too, he just hasn't been drawn yet. Shy, musically talented individual. *Nods*

  3. Hey Kayla,
The glasses really do look good on you :) I'm glad your headache problem has been fixed...not fun to have bad effects from reading.

By the way, I finally have some news. Anna has moved out. She got a job as a live in Nanny to twins and the job entails, 'living-in'. So she moved to the couple's house(I still don't know their last name)even before the twins were born so they could all get used to each other.. And the twins were born on Labor Day :). So she's having fun... :)

Oh, and as you could probably tell, we've put off the booktrip because Baker Books closed down their used book section until sometime this fall because they're doing renovations. But I'll let you know when we set a date.

    1. I too am very glad to have the headaches gone...at least, most of them.

I actually heard about Anna's new job from Gillian; it must be so exiting (and new) for her! She has two little charges all to herself, it sounds like. :)

That's too bad about the book trip; but I'm not sure if I'd be able to go at all. I need to be going away from home less and less in the coming months, as we're expecting a new addition to the family around early April. Depends on how Mom's feeling. :)

    2. A new addition? Yaaay! :) That'll be fun. I'm assuming you don't have names yet...?

I'll let you know when we're going just in case, perhaps you could just send a list of any books you want picked up. It'd be nice to see you again soon :) I'm not so sure how we're working out the Pride and Prejudice slumber party thing...since Anna's gone. She should get more time off as the babies get older. But we'd want to plan it to where you can come too.
